Postgraduate Diploma in Teacher Librarianship (PGTL)

1) Introduction
The PGTL programme is designed so that the students develop the knowledge and
skills to serve as a Teacher Librarian. The course contents are designed in such a way
that they develop an understanding and expertise in Teacher Librarianship through
a series of educational experience. All Students study a core of seven subjects. Each
Subject will be of 40 hours duration. In addition. the students will complete a
research project on a selected topic and produce a research report, which will be of
equal weight of core subjects.
2) Entry requirements
• A bachelor’s degree awarded from a recognized higher educational institution, and
• A satisfactory working knowledge of English
3) Intended Learning Outcomes
• To prepare graduates to perform at the initial professional level as a Teacher Librarian in a Sri Lankan
school and to provide the basis for further professional career needs.
• To give a broad professional education and a solid training in basic professional skills, which will
enable students to enter confidentially into work appropriate to newly qualified Teacher Librarian.
• To provide a broad understanding of the principles of Teacher Librarianship, of the organization and
management of school library and learning resource centers and of handling storage and retrieval
of information in all media.
• To initiate students into the theory and practice for research as it is applied in the field of Teacher
Librarianship.
