Department of Commerce and Financial Management intends to further its contribution to the emerging landscape in Sri Lanka by offering a postgraduate degree of one (01) years duration in line with the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) issued by the University Grants Commission, specially to cater to the early and mid-career graduates and professionals. This MBS degree programme is equal to the SLQF Level 9.
The Master of Business Studies (MBS) postgraduate degree by coursework is designed to provide a high level of knowledge of business functions and develop skills to identify, analyze, and solve business problems using teaching pedagogies widely applied in business schools worldwide. This Master’s degree program shall also serve as the foundation for students who intend to pursue more advanced taught and research degrees locally or internationally in future. The one-year Master of Business Studies postgraduate program shall also encourage qualified and employed females to pursue postgraduate degrees and this could contribute to their advancement at work place and society in a relatively shorter time span. This is because participation of females in the work force in Sri Lanka has been increasing due to increase of enrollment of female students in universities and professional education institutes and these are evidences of a progressive society.
Objectives of MBS
The aim of the MBS degree program is “to provide a recognized qualification that imparts an interdisciplinary knowledge of business functions to early and mid-career graduates and professionals to advance their careers locally and internationally”.
Students equipped with the Master of Business Studies degree shall be able to:
1. Demonstrate a substantive level of knowledge and understanding of business functions
2. Use efficiently and effectively, practical skills and enquiry within the business functions
3. Critically analyze data, make judgments and propose solutions to problems in business operations
4. Demonstrate awareness of the current developments in business environment
5. Demonstrate self-direction and confidence in solving problems;
6. Plan and implement tasks at managerial levels;
7. Exercise initiative and personal responsibility
8. Carry out independent studies for professional development
