Course Description
This course has been designed to facilitate your understanding of the concepts of common mental health disorders, epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology and your learning in the therapeutic nursing care of the patient with mental health problems using an evidenced-based approach. The role of the patient in their recovery and the skills necessary to conduct a comprehensive mental health assessment are of particular emphasis. It will provide you with excellent opportunities to develop knowledge and skills relevant to professional Psychiatric Nursing practice, including independent and critical thinking, and problem-solving. The broad aim of the course is to promote your personal, intellectual and professional development to meet the role dimensions of a qualified practitioner of Mental Health Nursing.

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, candidates will be able to:
Provide purposeful patient-centered (including care involvement as appropriate) evidence-based assessment, clinical measurement, care plan formulation, implementation and evaluation in a variety of settings.
Provide care that is empathic, non-discriminatory and culturally sensitive.
Work collaboratively with others involved in mental health care, e.g. patients, families and members of the multidisciplinary team, within the appropriate ethical, legal, professional and policy frameworks.
Provide care, whenever possible, in partnership with patients and their families and seek to empower the patient.
Demonstrate effective multidisciplinary, inter-agency and inter-sectoral working.
Demonstrate effective use of therapeutic communication skills.
