Course Description
Providing nursing care for older person is an area of specialisation that deals with the care and management of elderly patients with acute or chronic disease conditions. Over the years there has been a significant rise in the number of Nursing homes for elderly patients with different disease conditions requiring specialist care and management. This Course will contribute to the training of nurses to manage the ever-growing elderly patient numbers in hospitals and residential care facilities in Sri Lanka with the view to upgrade the standard of care.

This Course presents concepts and skills that lay a foundation into the nursing profession. Provides opportunities to attain the knowledge and skills that are necessary to promote health, prevent disease, and deliver advanced nursing care to older patients.

Course Outcomes
This Course is to provide participants with the essential knowledge and skills in the nursing management of elderly patients with multiple co-morbidities and empower nurses to participate actively in planning care and management of older patients and aged care and palliative care centers.

The aim of this Course is to,

help nurses to adapt and develop the necessary knowledge, reflective skills, and professional attributes to enable patients and their families to access services, participate in the therapeutic framework, and maximize their quality of life and well-being.
Provide nurses with experiences designed to enhance and challenge existing knowledge and skills to better inform and facilitate professional, evidence-based interventions on behalf of patients and family members.
Enable nurses to critically consider and evaluate the emergent nature of supportive and palliative care to effectively engage and intervene with patients and families experiencing a life-limiting illnesses.
