Diploma in Public Librarianship (DPL)

1) Introduction
Today, the Public Library is being transformed into a community development center and the social
and cultural role of the public library is ever-widening beyond the traditional services like book
issues, reference services, and project-based services. Therefore, it has become vital for those who
already work in public libraries, as well as those who would like to join a public library, to have a
much wider knowledge of the social and cultural contexts of the public library. The Diploma in
Public Librarianship intends to provide the appropriate knowledge, attitudes and skills required to
fulfill the new roles, and to produce a group of professionals who can shoulder the societal and
cultural transformation.
2) Target Group
Those who already work in public libraries and those who would like to join a public library.
3) Entry Requirements
Passing GCE (A/L) Old Syllabus: Passes in 04 subjects
New Syllabus: Passes in 03 main subjects
OR
Passing GCE (O/L) and the Certificate in Public Librarianship (CPL) / Advanced certificate in in Public
Librarianship (ACPL) or Advanced Certificate in Librarianship (ACL) awarded by the National Institute of
Library and Information Sciences.
4) Intended Learning Outcomes
After completing this course, the participants will be able to:
• Understand the new role of the Public Library,
• Identify the role of the Public Library in community-based development,
• Understand the contribution of the Public Library in the cultural promotion.
• Identify how modern information technology can be used in community development.
